Volunteer

September 2, 2011

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Moot Times. Without you, we’d just be a collection of 11″x17″ paper, without words, pictures or illustrations. We wouldn’t even have staples.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

You can volunteer by pitching us a story; offering to copyedit; having a story assigned and writing it; shooting photos for a story; writing a column; or drawing us a comic or illustration. Contact us for more information.

WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?

Geez. You get the experience of working on a deadline; you’ll learn valuable time management skills; you’ll have the joy of working with an editor to shrink or expand your story as appropriate; and you may get free tickets to a law event, if you’re a writer or photographer. It’s pretty great.

WHAT CAN I DO?

We’re interested in: Restaurant reviews; neighbourhood profiles; legal non-profit profiles; recipes; service pieces (how-tos, where-tos, that sort of thing) as well as anything else you can think of. We do accept opinion pieces, however, please ensure that your piece is timely enough to be run in our issue, and only start on it after you speak with an editor who accepts the story. There’s nothing worse than putting time into something and not having it printed because we’re run out of space, then have the story be stale a month later.

DO YOU HAVE MEETINGS?

Yes! The first Thursday of every month, in the Students’ Lounge. We have story assignment meetings, where we talk about editorial ideas, as well as content for the upcoming issue. You should come. Dates of meetings will be posted on the blog section of this site.

We also have editing “parties” where we buy a pizza and edit stories. We’ll announce those on the blog, too.
